Little Petra and Petra at Night

“Petra is a brilliant display of man’s artistry in turning barren rock into a majestic wonder.”
― Edward Dawson

One of the highlights of my summer trip to the Middle East was a trip to Petra, which is located in Jordan.

Before visiting Petra, we had a chance to go to what is referred to Little Petra.  Little Petra, like Petra, is an archaeological site where visitors can visit buildings, dated at least 300 BC, carved into beautiful sandstone canyons.

My friends and I were amazed at the beauty of Little Petra.

As blown away as we were with the marvels of Little Petra, we were not at all prepared for what we would encounter at Petra that evening and the next day.

That evening, we encountered Petra for the first time in the dark.  We took the very long walk to the Treasury, a gorgeous temple in Petra, guided through the sandstone canyons by luminaries placed all along the way.  We could not make much out except for the path that led us and other travelers.

Once we reached the Treasury, we were seated with other guests for the evening.

Once all were seated, a story was told.  At the conclusion of the story, the temple known as the Treasury, was lit by colorful lights to the delight of all who were in attendance.

Visiting Little Petra and Petra at Night were such incredible experiences.  Petra at Night just filled us all with great anticipation for our next day which would allow us to experience Petra during the day.

I hope you will check back for my next post which will share the delightful sights we experienced in Petra during the day!
