I began my project of making one photograph a day for the last five years of my teaching career by recording things I saw at school. The simple recording images, without children present soon led me to seek things more challenging, more meaningful.
One week I created images using slow shutter speed.
The items displayed in the hallways created such a burst of happy color when combined with camera motion and a slow shutter speed.
I am always seeking colors in whatever I photograph.
One of my wonderful students had a fascination with makeup from a very early age. It was a way for her to express herself creatively. One day, as a way to remember this special student, I asked if I could photograph her makeup.
It was when I began taking pictures of things that would connect me with the students I worked with, that the project became so much more meaningful. I will never look at this picture without remembering this very special student. The picture will take me to the time and place that I spent with her.
Another defining moment in the project was when I captured a student at play.
I knew, instantly, that these precious moments were what I needed to capture in my last 900 days of school.
