900 Days of School (Part Six)

“It is through living that we discover ourselves, at the same time as we discover the world around us.”
― Henri Cartier-Bresson

My project to take one photograph a day for the last five years of my teaching career began by simply recording the sights that surrounded me at school each day.

In thirty-two years, I have accumulated many materials that I use to teach mathematics.

Dominoes
Teddy Bear Counters

Photographing these manipulatives will allow me to remember the many hands that have held and counted these colorful materials.

I looked high and low every day for a subject to photograph.  One day, after school, I found my subject was waiting just above me on the ceiling.

Vent

After creating many images that were simply recording objects, I started to look for scenes that showed the presence of children without showing the children themselves.

Sorting

A day on the playground was spent well sorting these materials found in nature.

Lost Key Chain

A sign posted near the play equipment caught my eye.  The sign was posted in hopes that someone would find a lost keychain.

As I began to move away from simply recording the things I saw at school,  the photographs became more interesting.

I hope you will continue to join me for this photographic journey through my last 900 days of school.

  • Mary, these photos brought back such wonderful memories! I remember fondly getting kndg/1st grade students to help me sort materials for specific projects. They loved it and so did I!! And I loved the phonetic spelling on the “lost key chain” note. So adorable and so innocent. Your students are very blessed. I know that having photography helps you survive the difficult days also. My skills are so far below yours, but I really enjoy composing photographs. It is so creative. You will certainly enjoy having more time in retirement to spend on your hobbies. Hang in there! Miss seeing you.
    Love, Panze
