Fresh Outlook

I cannot believe it has been such a long time since my last blog post!  Life got so busy at the end of this school year.  Last week was my first partial week of summer break.  Unfortunately, I was sick my first three days of summer break.

Saturday I had the pleasure to explore an abandoned industrial area.  The area is undergoing transformation.  My friend and teacher, A.D. Wheeler, loves doing what he terms “abandonscape” photography.  You can see his wonderful work here.  Saturday, while I was photographing, I could certainly see the appeal.

I read about the opportunity to photograph in this industrial area on Facebook.  One of my workshop students and friend posted about the opportunity to photograph and explore this area with Nancy O. Albert , an artist and photographer with the Ciel Gallery.  Although this is not what I typically photograph, I found the experience to be just what I needed to get me excited about a summer of creation and photography.

We had the opportunity to photograph for about an hour and a half.  There were potential images everywhere you looked.  I could have spent all weekend photographing there without ever scratching the surface of the images that were there waiting to be captured.  After photographing, we downloaded and shared what we had captured with the group.  I always marvel at what others will see in the same locations where I am shooting.  It is one of the things that makes photography so fascinating!

It seems a bit ironic that a morning photographing the decay was just what I needed for a fresh outlook on my photography and creativity.  I am looking forward to seeing where my camera leads me this summer!
