Walking in a Winter Wonderland

“I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently? And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt; and perhaps it says, “Go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again.”
― Lewis Carrol

Of all the places I visit time and time again, Roan Mountain is a location that

absolutely never disappoints.  Each season, month, or day offers different visual delights to visitors.

This past weekend, my friend, Chris, and I planned a morning trip to Roan hoping to find snowy conditions.  In order to get to Roan in time to meet Chris prior to sunrise, I had to set the clock for 2:30 a.m.

When we arrived at Carver’s Gap to begin our hike to Round Bald, we were met with nearly perfect conditions for a morning of photography.  Although it was cold, it wasn’t the bone chilling cold that is often the case on Round Bald in winter.  Layers of clothing coupled with hand warmers did the trick to provide comfort.

There were amazing things to photograph at every turn along the trail.

Although we did not get the colors of sunrise light that we might have been hoping for, the number of compositions to explore were endless.

There is so much beauty to discover in winter.  Grab your warm clothing, handwarmers, and go explore!  I would love to see what you find!
