“If you obey all of the rules, you miss all of the fun.”
― Katharine Hepburn

It is important to learn the “rules” of photography so that you can use them to help you create compelling images.  It is also important to know when it is time to break the rules.

This week’s challenge for 52 frames was the rule of thirds.  Think of your frame as divided by a tic tac toe board.  If you are following the rule of  thirds, you will place your subject or what you want your viewer to focus on at one of the points of intersection.

I took the bracts of a poinsettia and arranged them on a light table.  I then used a small flashlight to illuminate the subject.

Saturday my friend Chris and I went to 40 Acre Rock to photograph.  I was drawn immediately to one tree and the surrounding area.  While working on my composition, I kept the rule of thirds in mind when placing the sun star.

As a tribute to Valentine’s Day, I made the following image, making sure to highlight something using the rule of thirds.

I enjoyed working on the week’s challenge.

If you would like to see all of the submissions for the rule of thirds, you can view them here.

I am looking forward to the next challenge and seeing where it leads me.
