“Beneath the Ginkgo, we find solace in the whispers of a world long forgotten.”

One of my favorite things to do each fall is to spend time with “my” ginkgo trees.
There is an intersection in Charlotte that has groupings of these incredible trees on all four corners. Since the trees grow close to my home, I can watch them for changes.
The ginkgos typically change color weeks after the other trees in the area put on their colorful show.
This year, I made about six visits to my trees. Each visit presented different weather conditions, leading to various photography opportunities.
During my first visits, I enjoyed the trees during a light rain. One of the leaves made its way to my boot, where it stayed until I returned to the car.
Sometimes, just being in a place leads to unexpected magic, such as when these two red cars made their way through my set-up composition.
During my last visit of the year to my trees, I had the opportunity to photograph my son, Jeremy, his wife, Abi, and my two granddogs, Willy and Marlow. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to share this special place with them.
Photographing these trees was one of my self-assigned projects for this fall. Working on projects has always been one of the most fulfilling ways I have grown as a photographer. I would love for you to consider joining me for my Personal Projects Workshop in January to explore short- and long-term projects. You can find more information about this workshop here.
Since these trees grow close to my home, I could watch them for changes and visit them frequently. I am finding myself photographing close to home now more than ever. In February of 2024, I will offer a three-session online workshop exploring ways to make creative photographs close to home. You can find out more about this workshop here.
I look forward to spending time with my ginkgo trees again next fall. Do you have a special place close to your home that you enjoy photographing time and time again?
