Petra

“Petra is one of the densest palimpsests of human history. Layer upon layer of archaeological remains provide evidence of a fascinating story that stretches back for thousands of years. It is a masterpiece of human achievement, an aesthetic and architectural marvel, and the source of a huge amount of inspiration since the 19th century.”

― Charles River Editors, Petra: The History of the Rose City, One of the New Seven Wonders of the World

My first experience of Petra, at night, filled my head with wonder of what I would see when visiting during the day.  Since I only really saw the pathway, lit by luminaries, and the Treasury lit,

the daytime visit would be like experiencing Petra for the very first time.

When my friends and I arrived in the morning, we walked the same path from the entrance to the Treasury.  This time, we were able to take in the sights along the 35 minute walk.  As we started along the path, it was open on both sides.

You could make your way on foot or pay for alternative modes of transportation.

It was hard to take it all in as there were amazing things carved into the sandstone and sights to see at every turn.

At one point along the way, you walk through the Siq, a narrow gorge that ranges between 10 and 30 feet in width.

Visitors will never forget the moment they see the Siq  opening up to reveal The Treasury.

Petra attracts many tourists daily.  There are opportunities to purchase souvenirs along the way.

I decided to purchase a shawl for my mother.

I chose these bottles of sand art for Randy and Jeremy.  The artist, who graciously allowed me to photograph him while making a camel, added their names in Arabic to the bottles.

As a teacher, my schedule dictates when I can travel.  For those considering a trip, keep in mind that June is an extremely HOT time to visit.

I will be forever grateful for the time I was able to spend exploring Petra, which is known as one of the current Seven Wonders of the World.

I could spend years exploring without tiring of things to discover there.
