900 Days of School: Play

“Play is the highest form of research.”
― Albert Einstein

One of my favorite times of each school day is recess.

As the demands of the academic program have become more and more rigorous for first graders during my tenure, recess is one thing that has remained constant.  Recess is a time when kids can be kids.  I am always so amazed at the abundance of energy that

is expended as my children run, jump and yell with careless abandon during recess.  Oh, how I wish I had even a fraction of that explosive energy.

Recess is a time when I get a chance to really observe my kids in their “natural habitat”.  I love seeing them exploring, interacting, and sharing outside on the playground.

I am certain that when I retire, watching children enjoy life in such a joyous manner during play will be one of the things that I will miss the most.
