“As leaves cover the forest floor in a carpet of vibrant rusts, orange and gold, autumn proves that sometimes death too can be a beautiful thing.”

Whenever I visit Gibbs Gardens, located in Ballground, Georgia, I make it a point to also visit
Old Car City. Old Car City is located in White, Georgia and less than an hours drive from Gibbs Gardens.
This November, while I spent much of my time photographing at the garden, I made sure to save a couple of hours of my weekend to explore Old Car City. Old Car City is especially interesting to explore during autumn as the fallen leaves form a blanket on top of the rusting cars.
I have always wanted to visit Old Car City in the rain. My friends, who arrived there earlier in the week had the wonderful rainy conditions that I longed to find. Rain causes the colors of the cars to become much more saturated. As things often work out, the time I was at Old Car City had fully sunny conditions. I had to shift my focus from what I would have liked to have found to the conditions that were present.
I used the sunny conditions to my advantage as they were causing shadows on the rusted vehicles of yesterday. The shadows made the textures even more apparent.
I found, as I made my way through the rows and rows of cars, that I was drawn to the smaller details of the cars rather than to the larger scenes.
My favorite image from my hours of exploration was one that reminded me of a landscape in nature. I could almost feel the mountain air in this image.
The next time you are photographing, make sure you let go of the conditions that you wish were present so that you can make the most of the conditions that are present in the location while you are there.
Each time I leave Old Car City I find myself looking forward to my next visit.
