I still remember how much I enjoyed my first visit to Tarpon Springs. Tarpon Springs is located in Pinellas County, Florida. I was a child visiting my grandmother, my Meemaw, when first encountering this wonderful city. When one enters this historic city, it is like taking a step back in time.
Visitors enjoy the sponge docks, boat cruises, shopping, and Greek food while visiting Tarpon Springs.
You can read about the history of Tarpon Springs here.
My most vivid memories from my first visit to Tarpon Springs are of
taking a boat ride to watch sponge diving. Each time I have visited as an adult, I always make sure to make one of these boat rides part of my experience in Tarpon Springs.
The diver prepares for the dive by putting on 170 pounds of gear necessary for the dive. Passengers watch as the diver is helped into his gear, guided into the water and then watch the bubbles from the diver as he makes his way to the sponges.
Once the diver has successfully retrieved a sponge, he makes his way back to the boat. Passengers get a chance to feel the sponge as it is when it first comes out of the water.
While aboard we enjoyed learning about sponges, the history of sponge diving, and about Tarpon Springs.
After our boat ride, we enjoyed a wonderful lunch at Rusty Bellies Waterfront Grill. I had one of the best Greek salads I have ever had.
The next time you are near Pinellas County, I hope you will visit Tarpon Springs. There is something there that will bring a smile to everyone’s face!
