Looking Closely in Charleston, SC

Last year, when I looked at my portfolio images for the year, I noticed that I had not spent as much time working with close-up photography as in previous years.  I decided that I needed to spend more time doing close-up photography this year as it is an area that I really enjoy.

During our recent Photo Tour in Charleston, SC, I was sure to focus

on close looks at subjects.  I was able to achieve close looks of subjects in two different ways.  One of the ways I looked closely at subjects was using a long lens which enabled me to zoom in on what I wanted to show the viewer.

The featured image above and the next image were created using the Nikon 80-400 mm lens.  The image was taken while visiting Shem Creek just prior to sunset.  I was drawn to the details of the shrimp boats that were there.

While in the swamp at Magnolia Plantation and Gardens, a friend was focusing on a tree.  When I took a look, I was so intrigued by the wonderful details in the wood.  I took many different shots to try to find a pleasing composition.  This was my favorite of the details in this interesting tree.

Another way I was able to achieve a close look at subjects in Charleston was using my 200 mm Nikon micro lens.

I was thrilled when I discovered an area while looking for subjects in downtown Charleston that was covered with pink flowers among green grass.

My last close up image taken in Charleston was taken on a church in the downtown area.  I had located my subject, unpacked all of my gear, placed the camera on the tripod, when I noticed a man heading towards my subject with a weed eater.  It was his job to eliminate my subject.

I asked the gentleman for a moment or two to capture my subject before he removed it.  This subject no longer exists.  I was thankful that I took the time to take a closer look.

The next time you are out photographing, make sure to take a closer look.  You will be amazed at what you will discover!
